I recommend a visit to London’s auction rooms while you’re in town. Even if you’re not looking to begin collecting yourself, it’s fun to fantasise! Some of the range and variety on display is as good as at paid musem exhibition, and the catalogue writing and research at major auction houses compares favourably with similar efforts at large public art institutions.

I recently enjoyed a pre-auction viewing of the Hutchinson collection of fairground art and ephemera at Bonham’s near Bond Street. Plan ahead – there’s something new in the showrooms nearly every week!
