Gilbert Bayes

A beautiful example of Bayes’s external sculptural work at the Odeon Shaftesbury Avenue. Gilbert Bayes is the sculptor of the Queen of Time who greets shoppers at Selfridges. This frieze has adorned the Saville theatre since 1937, and has watched it go from theatre to concert venue to cinema multiplex and now back to theatre again, with the announcement Cirque du Soleil’s announcement. They are building a permanent London home on the site, retaining the lower floors and front facade with Bayes’s frieze and decorations on Drama through the Ages…

It’s on my London Adored and Explored route, and I recommend a visit before the developers get started on it!
